Pilates (Mat)
Pilates (pronounced puh-LAH-teez) was created in the 1920s by German Joseph H. Pilates. He applied Eastern and Western ideologies of fitness in his own unique exercise to create a refreshing non-impact workout that challenges strength, coordination, flexibility, and balance. The guiding principals of concentration, control, centering, precision, fluidity and breath connect the mind and body to work as an integrated whole.
The focus of a Pilates workout is on your body's "core" - the abdominals, hips, lower back, and glutes.
With core stabilization, back and abdominal strength improve resulting in better posture and balance!
Please wear workout clothing. Pilates Mat Workout Pilates can be done without using any equipment. Wherever you can lie down and spread your arms wide, you can do the mat workout!
Beginning Pilates

Throught our Beginning Pilates class you will:
- become aware of and learn how to use your stabilizing/ core muscles in your body
- understand how to use your other muscles more efficiently through mat exercises
- develop stronger, leaner, longer and more balanced muscles throughout your whole body
- be more conscious of when you slink into slouch mode
- be able to create better muscle habits when sitting at your desk, driving, standing
Each muscles has its own specific job. Problems and imbalances occur when one muscle is doing jobs meant for other muscles:
- Most commonly, the stabilizing/core muscles get a free ride at the expense of the whole body.
- In this situation, your upper trapezius muscles work the most resulting in a sore neck and shoulders.
- The middle and lower trapezius muscles are often completely bypassed even though they are made to stabilize.
As we get older the effects of gravity take their toll, so learn how to let your body work for you rather than be worked on by gravity.
Improve your posture and your own relationship with your spine and your whole body.

Following a diagnosis of cancer and undergoing invasive treatment, the last thing you may feel like is exercising, but exercise can be an important part of the healing process.The American Cancer Society now recommends low to moderate physical activity during and after treatment to “boost energy levels, relieve stress, decrease anxiety and depression and stimulate appetite.”
Pilates can provide a gentle reintroduction to body movement at any stage of cancer treatment and recovery.If you are able to lie down and breathe, you will be able to try this mind-body exercise routine.
This class is for those with little or no Pilates experience.We will focus on posture, body alignment and quality of movement to help you perform your everyday activities with ease. The emphasis of the exercises is on control and precision to build strength, increase flexibility and mobility throughout the entire body, making it an ideal exercise for individuals with muscle imbalances or stiffness due to reduced activity and the effects of cancer treatment.
