Traditional Chinese Medicine
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) uses acupuncture, herbal therapy, diet and energy work to assist in achieving balance throughout the body. It can be used to treat common diseases, chronic and acute disorders.
TCM is a 5000 year-old system of healing based upon the Chinese philosophy of the relationship between human beings and Nature. The basic principle is that the human body is a microcosm within the macrocosm of Nature. There is a continuous and dynamic relationship between the macro and micro systems. Good health is vitally dependent on maintaining an harmonious relationship with nature.
Another fundamental principle is that of Yin and Yang, the two basic complementary energies of Nature. All of the manifestations of nature are thought to be composed of a specific, yet dynamic balance of these two forces. Health is also thought to be due to the appropriate balance of yin and yang in the body.
This balance is reflected in many ways, but most fundamentally is that of the relationships of Qi (pronounced "chee"). Qi is the vital energy of which everything is made.
In the human body Qi flows through a system of channels and meridians. The Qi is responsible for activating and maintaining all of the physiological functions of the body. When the Qi is weak or obstructed or disrupted in anyway from its natural flow and function, illness may occur in the body. As a kinked garden hose cannot adequately nourish the flowers and plants, disrupted Qi will impede the flow of all the body’s vital fluids and organ functions.
The therapeutic methods of TCM all involve different approaches to altering or augmenting the circulation of Qi in order to activate the inherent, self-healing abilities of the body.
